Very few of us know about Maulvi Mohammad Baqar the owner/editor of a weekly Urdu newspaper called Dehli Urdu Akhbar and his role in 1857. Moulvi Mohammed Baqar editor of Urdu Akhbar Dehli was the first journalist to be martyred by the British army. He was tied with canon and blown up for his seditious writing against British colonial rule in the First War of Independence 1857. During the decisive phase of the war, the administrative and the communicative system was disrupted and thrown out of gear. In that period of political turmoil and breakdown of communication machineries Maulvi Mohammad Baqar provided cohesive direction to the war by fearless reporting. Baqar, kept the revolutionaries well informed about the war progresses which had started at Meerut on 10th May 1857 The issue of 5th July of Dehli Urdu Akhbar, acquires crucial significance as It reproduced the copy of the ishtihar or the public notice pasted on the Jama Masjid by agents of the British. In the notice the British tried to delude the Muslims and prodded them to wage a holy war against the Hindus and not the Christians. The Christians were called the natural allies of the Muslims as People of the Book according to the Islamic shariat. Maulvi Mohammad Baqar responded immediately and labeled the notice to be the scheme of those people who were the enemies of both Hindu dharma and iman of the Muslims. He firmly made it clear that the British should never try to deceive anyone on the pretext of the shariat as he was an adherent of the notion that Hindus and Muslims share common legacy of religion and culture which served as the binding force for the Indians. ummah/forum/showthread.php?200019-Maulvi-Mohammad-Baqar-in-the-Vanguard-of-1857-Delhi
