Very few residents will be aware of the presence of badgers living - TopicsExpress

Very few residents will be aware of the presence of badgers living and breeding in Coundon Wedge. A very well-hidden set on private land was abandoned by its occupants about 3 years ago, possibly due to the heavy construction work on Lyons Park. Last autumn however new signs of badgers were noticed which continued through the winter. Then in April and May this year a few short frames of infra-red film were obtained showing 2 young cubs playing around the holes during the night-time hours. This set was kept secret to avoid disturbance by well-meaning nature lovers attempting to see this couple of badgers establishing their new home, probably leading to them abandoning the set again. Such attempts would have probably been unsuccessful anyway, as, proven by the timing of their triggering of the remote controlled camera, the badgers did not leave their holes until several hours after darkness fell. Due to the almost impenetrable thorny undergrowth, access was extremely difficult and active badger-watching was not an option. Now sadly the area is no longer accessible due to a new house construction. I hope the meadow where the set is situated will not be unduly disturbed and hopefully the Council will have imposed the required planning conditions to ensure this, plus also making sure they are adhered to ! I am sure that the presence of wildlife such as this can only enhance the value of Coundon Wedge as an open space to be treasured for the future.
