Very good article. A must read for theists and atheists alike. Explains so many reasons why I am spiritual and not religious. 1) Very few people have read the Bible cover-to-cover on their own time. Yes, I have read it. I have also read other translations of some very questionable passages. One thing that became very apparent is that the words that we use in our translations dont really match the Hebrew/Greek meaning and the depth of the manuscript is lost in translation. 2) Focusing on the negative aspects of the Bible forces the population to miss the point of the Bible entirely and this is why the book warns us of false prophets. Or, more accurately, bias in translation and meaning. The Bible is meant to be read by the individual and then discussed as a group. Not the other way around. That is the intention of a Bible study. 3) My atheist and agnostic friends, you need to be a little more forgiving and show a bit of grace when faced with push back from a theist. And I encourage you to actually pick up the book and read a bit of it. Compare King James to NIV translations. You will see a big difference. You will also see that certain churches require one version over another and that is bad theology in practice. 4) For the theists, do more than attend church and listen to the pastor. Question him/her after the sermon. Read the passages for yourself. AND do yourself a favor, read the Koran and the works of Buddha and Taoism. There is insight to be gained from understanding other worlds of view.
