In brief: "Over some historical period of hominin evolution, it was advantageous for males to give the vocal impression of being bigger than their actual size; and this advantage was big enough to drive genetic change, overcoming the disadvantage of greater propensity for choking to death on aspirated food, or getting lung infections from aspirated vomit."
