Very often, some really feel good posts are made, typically an inspirational kind of photo, and a quote attributed to the Buddha. Except that looking at the words used, the sentence structure, and etc., of the quote offered, its clear to me that The Buddha could not possibly have said it. Rather than being inspired in such cases, my usual feeling is something along the lines of well, crap. There is a website run by a fellow who has made quite an effort to research fake Buddha quotes. fakebuddhaquotes/ He does a pretty good job of trying to find the actual source (if any) for the various quotes incorrectly attributed to The Buddha. Why bother about this? In the first case, its just generally good when you are offered accurate information. No, Abraham Lincoln didnt invent the Internet. But secondly, with regard to religious information -- thats an area where far more people are seeking meaning. There is a canon that relates what the Buddha actually said. Distorting that canon does not seem like such a great idea. Christians are always putting words into the mouth of their god. God says youre gonna burn in hell!!! maybe for example. Their god didnt say that. Some Christian did. Call me picky if you want, but I really dont much care for words being put into the mouth of The Buddha.
