Very valuable, we needed to hear this. Tragedy is the UKs - TopicsExpress

Very valuable, we needed to hear this. Tragedy is the UKs mainstream media has portrayed Islam in such a monochrome, narrow manner. Three other points Id make. First, I was fascinated by the deflation visible in the faces of the three people sitting opposite the speaker, a story in their faces. Quite a sight. Second, but sadly, I can now see where the combative style displayed by Mr Cameron, and his colleagues each time they stand at the dispatch box-even the boxes are there in the Unions debating chamber-comes from. This style is what alienates so many people towards out political class, puts so many people off entering parliamentary politics, and why this university is the nursery for many in government. This is what produces a political elite, which excludes so much of our society from participating in politics. Third, very encouragingly, the present intense public debate about terrorism, triggered by the the growth of what calls itself IS, is also triggering a much better understanding of what Islam is, and frankly, what it isnt. This is extremely healthy, long overdue and welcome. Our Muslim members of society are becoming mainstream, a paradigm shift is taking place, people are coming together because followers of Islam are articulating who and what they are in ways that have been missing in the past. This movement, coming together, has been hastened by the picture of the sufferings of Gazans at the hands of the Israeli military. Through this medium, the internet, ordinary people, like me, have been able to construct a better picture for ourselves of what is happening. All secondary data, but far wider and more complete than when The Press was just a collection of papers at the newsagents. So thanks for posting, Charlotte Lindgren.
