Veteran to BS in Nursing Program Thanks so much for inquiring about the V-CARE program-Creating Access to Registered Nurse Education for Veterans. We recently received notification from the Health Research Service Administration (HRSA) regarding federal funding to support the development of this exciting program that prepares military and veteran medics and corpsmen as bachelors prepared registered nurses. It is an innovative and exciting program and we are very interest in having you apply for the program. We anticipate that applications for this program will be available in early November. Our first class will start in August 2014. Here is some information regarding the program. Dr. Rita DAoust and I would be more than happy to meet with you, any of your staff, and/or others in the National Capitol Region to discuss the program. V-CARE (Creating Access to Registered Nurse Education for Veterans) is geared at increasing the enrollment of military service members and veterans in the Bachelor of Science in nursing program (VBSN), supporting their academic progression and graduation, and facilitating successful completion of the NCLEX-RN examination and employment as a registered nurse. Our program looks to improve the educational outcomes of our military and veteran population by allowing us to conditionally admit medics and corpsmen into our nursing program while they complete their prerequisites anywhere in the world while either on active duty or upon separation/retiring from the military thus removing barriers to veterans enrollment into undergraduate nursing programs. We then provide a separate BSN sequence for medics and corpsmen by awarding actual nursing credit for military training and service that decreases the time to degree completion (upper division coursework is completed in 4 semesters). In addition, Dr. Rita DAoust (the grant primary investigator and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs) and I are also currently looking into a bridge program for these students that would provide access to our graduate nursing programs (BSN to PhD/DNP). The University of South Florida was ranked 4th in the Nation for Best Colleges for Veterans by Military Magazine last year. In FY 2011 over 20,000 returning medics and corpsmen were unemployed. With a significant nationwide nursing shortage our program is poised to help bridge that shortage gap by providing BSN education to highly skilled, medically trained medics and corpsmen (I have included addition information in the attachment). Through our collaboration with the USF Office of Admissions, the USF Office of Veterans Affairs, and the USF CON we feel we have an amazing program to offer our medics and corpsmen who bring a wealth of knowledge and training to the nursing profession. For more information please view our You Tube videos-( youtube/watch?v=H1-yl2ZBYJY) and (youtube/watch?v=1-yLGJYtgvw). The program information can be located on our V-CARE webpage (health.usf.edu/nursing/academics/vcare) or through our University of South Florida College of Nursing home page (health.usf.edu/nursing). Please feel free to forward this information. Respectfully, Alicia Gill Rossiter MSN, ARNP, PNP-BC, FNP Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force Reserves Nurse Corps College of Nursing Military Liaison University of South Florida College of Nursing
