Veterans Day 2013 A special acknowledgement to service members of African American heritage who -- along with those of Native, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Japanese, and Chinese heritage -- throughout our history had to fight to fight. Today, with the elimination of universal service (the draft) our armed forces are disproportionately comprised of people of color and poor whites primarily from small towns and other exurban areas. That leaves little emotional skin in the game for those who decide when to make war and deploy the troops. Want to really thank a vet today? Work to improve their living conditions while on active duty and their lifetime benefits throughout the remainder of their lives! Veterans number significantly amongst the hungry, the homeless, and those with insufficient mental and physical healthcare. Lets tell the Congress and the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration that we find that unacceptable.
