Veterans Day ! Government agencies , schools, banks and some companies are closed as a tribute to the Veterans who survived the past wars in protecting freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. I was lucky that I was not drafted into the military during Vietnam War, since I was attending school full time. Although I do not believe in war as a means of settling differences among ideologies, I do believe in protecting ourselves and other weaker nations against aggression that threatens the basic freedoms each of us should and deserve to have. As an immigrant, my family had to leave Hungary because my Dad would have been sent to jail, or maybe even Siberia, for speaking out against the communists who ruled the country. We left during the Hungarian uprising when my parents realized that the Hungarian Freedom Fighters were losing the revolution as the Russian Communist Army invaded our country. I am, therefore, grateful to USA for accepting us and giving us the opportunities that we have enjoyed, and to the Veterans who fought to secure our nation & the freedoms that I can truly appreciate today !
