Veterans, family members and the community are invited to the Martin Luther King Jr. observance Tuesday at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center. The program begins at 11 a.m. in the Matousek Auditorium. The featured speaker for the event is the director of operations and special projects at Centro Hispano Milwaukee, Amy Crumble. “We must acknowledge Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. and the work he has done, and at the same time honor those he inspired who volunteer every day in the community,” said Crumble. King is not a veteran, but Crumble sees similarities in their work. “Both Doctor King and veterans served in great capacities for those in need without knowing who those people were,” said Crumble. “Like Doctor King, veterans go out and fight for justice and equality, and in that respect their work is similar.” Host of the event is Karen Berte, program manager of the Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Programs at the Milwaukee VA. The Latimore Brothas will sing the National Anthem, a veteran, Jesse Anderson, will recite the “I have a dream” speech, and a musical selection by Jeffrey McNeil, a previous National Creative Arts winner. For more information, call Cynthia Hamilton at 414-384-2000, ext. 47129.
