Veterinary volunteer at the Lwiro Primate Sanctuary in DRC Hiring Organization: Centre de rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro Date Posted: 2014-12-01 Position Description: The Centre de Rehabilitation des Primates de Lwiro (CRPL) is a primate sanctuary located in the South Kivu Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Centre was established in 2002 by the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and the Centre de Recherche en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN) and is now managed by a consortium of local and international organisations including the ICCN, CRSN, Coopera, Venner av Lwiro and Friends of Lwiro Australia. The CRPL currently houses fifty eight chimpanzees and sixty five monkeys, representing more than ten different species, all victims of the illegal wildlife trade in the DRC. With established education and awareness programs, and as the only wildlife sanctuary in the region, the CRPL acts as a crucial resource for all conservation organisations working in the area. The Centre is situated just outside the boundary of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega (PNKB), making it the ideal venue for great ape health, law enforcement and conservation programs and is included in the PNKB’s Operational Plan and also in the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) for the Kivu Landscape, indicating the Centre’s imperative role in conservation in the region. The CRPL is also a Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) member sanctuary. The CRPL invites applications for experienced primate veterinarians, even if we would consider experienced veterinaries with not practice in primates. The Veterinarian will be responsible for ensuring appropriate veterinary care. This includes but is not limited to designate a preventative health program, disease surveillance and prevention, administering analgesics anesthetics and diagnosis, treatment of diseases and basic training of local caregivers. Qualifications/Experience: - Veterinary degree and 3 years of experience in the field of veterinary medicine. - Some French skills is a plus. - Social skills, patient and tolerant. - Experience living in a developing country, preferably Africa is a plus. - Previous experience working with chimpanzees or great apes is a plus. - Proficient computer skills (Microsoft, Excel). Salary/funding: Voluntary. Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging): Volunteer must pay for all expenses including flights, visas and travel. Accommodation and meals will have a cost of 350 dollars per month. Term of Appointment: At least 6 months. Application Deadline: We would like these positions to commence as soon as possible.
