Via #Greater Kashmir A good move... Conducting exams in March, on the whole, is a right decision.... EXAM DEBATE... AHMAD KASHMIRI... All exams from elementary to varsity level have been postponed till March 2015. Whether this postponement was politically motivated or not, students - particularly those brought down to the floor - have heaved a sigh of relief after this decision was taken. The decision faced a criticism from various quarters that eighty percent students have been made to suffer giving weight to the sufferings of only twenty percent of the community. Some stake holders plead that the decision should have been taken for those studying in Matric and above, and exams upto 9th class should have been held. On the other hand private schools opposed the decision tooth and nail and on the ground some private schools are already engaged in conducting exams. Barring the the fate of such exams, if government strictly makes orders to be followed by one and all, in that case private schools may have to re-examine their pupil, though formally in March next year. There may be a political motivation behind the decision, but let us ponder that would conducting exams today have been a wise decision? Perhaps, No! The devastating floods shook the whole state. Now when one and a half month has passed, flood- hit people are not in a position to enter and live in their homes, not to speak of ensuring studies for their wards. Flood has brought sufferings with it that are beyond expectation and imagination. Victims have undergone a huge trauma and students are no exception to it. Even if it is supposed that rehabilitation is possible soon and victims are able to start their chore again, but will the flood-hit people be able to get back to normal. In Kulgam and Pulwama districts some habitations have vanished from existence, in Islamabad and Baramulla flood brought havoc and in Srinagar and Budgam the seeing is believing makes us understand the depth of devastation. The havoc is not less in Rajori and Jammu region. The students living in these areas have lost all they had. They are collecting the ruins (read books) from the debris of flood (If at all they find any book unaffected). Those students who were living in rented rooms in these areas have no different story to narrate. Rajbagh, Jawaharnagar, Bemina and Karanagar were the places where students would reside as tenants. What has happened in these areas is not to be explained. The Board of School Education Kashmir remained submerged in water with its stationary and other examination records perhaps soaking in water for weeks together. Thus, even if the affected lot falls as much only as twenty percent but yet conducting of exams was not fair at this time. March Session is beneficial for Kashmir students because of climatic feasibility. If academic session is stared in April and ended in November, it gives us eight months of schooling or working, and a good time for exam preparation as well, whereas the November session ends academically in September only and starts in March giving only seven months of teaching learning in schools and colleges. Keeping all those points in view, I think the decision is good and we all must appreciate it. (Ahmad Kashmiri is a teacher from Kunzar Tangmarg) hmadkashmiri@gmail
