Via Nathan Winograd: This is a lie. This graphic is making its rounds on Facebook. There are 314,000,000 people in the U.S. If each person needed to care for seven animals to end killing, that would amount to 2.2 billion animals. Thats billion with a B. In reality, there are three million animals dying in shelters but for a home. So the shelter promoting this has inflated the truth 700-fold. And they ignore that over 20 million people get a new companion animal every year. Even if one were to include every dog and cat living on the street, the calculus is not even close. Although used to promote spay/neuter, it defends systematic lethal violence towards animals by portraying the killing as necessary. The claim also falsely assumes that No Kill isnt possible, even though it has already been achieved, including in communities with per capita intake rates 20 times higher than New York City. Most did it in six months or less and some even before a comprehensive spay/neuter program was in place. They did it by adopting their way out of killing. And given that they have done it, we should not excuse those that have not. While people surrender animals to shelter, it is the shelters that kill them. And one does not necessarily follow or excuse the other. In other words, we can create No Kill communities even in the face of public irresponsibility. And in many communities, weve done exactly that. That is the standard we must hold all of them to.
