Via National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention: Today, we have launched our highly-anticipated resource, the Framework for Successful Messaging. It was created as part of our priority to change the public conversation about suicide. What content is unsafe? The Framework’s Safety recommendations for public messaging are based on research (link is external) showing that certain types of media reports about suicide deaths may spur imitation of suicidal behavior among vulnerable individuals (people in despair or already thinking about suicide). Increased risk is associated with: - Repeated, prominent, or sensational coverage - *** Details about suicide method or location *** - Portraying suicide as a common or acceptable response to adversity - Glamorizing or romanticizing suicide - Presenting simplistic explanations for suicide - Including personal details that encourage identification with the person who died Please STOP sharing content that doesnt abide by these guidelines. Its up to each one of us to learn what is safe and responsible coverage on suicide, what helps - what hinders. Take a few minutes, read this resource, get familiar and start implementing what they and research have shown to be safe. HOW we talk about suicide matters very much. If you are going to SHARE this post, please include the status post Ive shared here so others can easily know what NOT to do when having public conversations around suicide.
