Via Paws for Epilepsy: Dilantin is classified as an Anti-convulsant drug or medically an AED; Anti-Epileptic Drug. Its commonly the first line of defense against seizures, being its common and usually readily available. Plus, pretty effective. The pill form has a severe sedating effect and at times, people have been thought to be drunk, cause of the medicine. Its rare to overdose on Dilantin, due to the way the body metabolizes the drug. However, NOT impossible. Now, the IV form, Speaking first hand experience. Its in a class all on its own. I like to consider myself fairly strong. IV Dilantin brings me to tears, EVERY SINGLE time. It burns the veins and if not properly placed in the vein is strong enough to eat away the muscle and connective tissue, which is called purple glove syndome. (I have a permanent bruise, from a small amount that got under my skin). Its torture to have to sit there while its being infused. Something that hurts so much is actually helpful. It seldomly can be infused any quicker than an hour because its that costic. Even when the IV is properly placed, I get a red rash all around the site due to the dilantin. Purple Glove Syndrome has been the effect of amputations, and people having surgery to relieve the pressure of the swelling/expanding tissue. *Sidenote: these posts are based on almost 8 years of first hand experience, other peoples accounts and research. In NO way am I a dr or medical professional. Michelle
