Via People for the Plains - Dear Premier Baird, It is my melancholy duty to inform you that the farmers of NSW will not stand by and allow our only reliable source of clean water to be permanently placed at risk from the commencement of the unconventional procurement of methane gas from coal seams through our Great Artesian Basin in NSW. No person of sound mind, who understands the true complexities of what is at stake, could possibly back the proposal. It is with nearly four years of devotion to learning, researching, attending meetings and that included with SANTOS for two years of community consultative committee meetings, I attended, as a member of the public and with farming country covered by PEL 238 which also covers the proposed first stage Narrabri Gas Project. Mike, if you trust anyone to deliver clean fresh food to the good people of this nation. you must acknowledge it is Aussie farmers who are doing it. Year in, year out, sustainable, renewable, clean beef, lamb, bread, fruit & vegetables. You may think you are taken for granted in your line of work, but, farmers will tell you the one thing they never take for granted is water. Unreliable rainfall, leaves only clean groundwater for us to survive, literally! That is all we drink here, underground water. That is all our cattle drink, underground water, sheep, goats, chickens, and our workmate, the dog and most country towns. If you can just please envisage, the terribly reckless idea, that a government would place that same water at risk and ruin our lifeblood. We cannot live here without underground water. It is utter imbicility to ever compare the USA to Australia for water supply. They (USA) have major water pipelines joining states for hundreds and thousands of miles. They have metres of snow that melts into rushing rivers, every year, for their use. We dont. What we do have is an established industry of agriculture and the largest threat to its sustainability today is coal seam gas mining. Dont say goodbye today to all the tomorrows of agriculture in Australia. We beseech the parliaments of Australia to recognize NSW is not going to forfeit agriculture to gas. Thankyou and regards always, Victoria Hamilton WEE WAA Thank you Victoria, for your vigilence on this issue! (Just one of 100,000 voices speaking out to protect the GAB!)
