Via my friend Rick Moody I just want to make sure that everybody sees this. A very reasonable and literary high school teacher in Scottsdale, AZ, is, as we speak, in danger of losing his job for a reading list heavy on contemporary American short fiction. Its a remarkable syllabus, and I count myself lucky to have been on it. Mr. Dave Peterson, the teacher in question, was, in the course of things, attacked for the work on his syllabus. It was considered provocative. In particular, I believe, he was heavily criticized by some local anti-free-expression types because of, among other things, a story by me. He was then forced to drop a bunch of things from his syllabus by a principal, etc. Its my second time being censored in AZ (check out the ICE STORM flap from a few years back), and I am fine with that. But I cant live with the idea that this guy with very ambitious taste for a high school teacher is in fear of his job, because of some dim-witted pro-censorship parents who have never read a decent book in their lives. So if you are of a mind to wade into an anti-literature controversy, try signing the enclosed petition, or visit the group Support Mr. Peterson here on FB.
