Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Prof. Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi said they have provided a rare opportunity to its students under ‘Earn-to-Learn’ scheme to meet their educational expenses by doing some part-time (three to four hour daily) internship job at their respective University’s regional offices. The incentive would also available to the University’s students who impart education to at least 10 children at their residential place, he said while addressing a function held in connection with Pakistan Day celebrations. The function was organized by AIOU’s Regional Directorate Rawalpindi at the Islamia High School No.IV, which was largely attended by students and faculty members of the AIOU, government colleges and schools. AIOU’s Dean Faculty Social Sciences Rashid A. Naeem, Director Regional Campus Rawalpindi Mian Muhammad Aslam and Director Admissions Zia Husnain Naqvi were also present on the occasion. VC Sangi said it would be a unique feature that AIOU, being a national university of the country, is not only playing an active and effective role to promote quality education but also providing support to deserving students, who are unable to continue their study due to financial constraint. Elaborating the ‘Earn to Learn’ scheme, he said, students can perform different kind of jobs in AIOU from three to four hours daily and 80 hours per month to manage their semester fee. He said the AIOU has earmarked Rs100 million for different schemes, adding “It is the largest contribution in history of any educational institute, which has been kept for welfare of the students.” Sangi said directives have been issued to regional directorates across the country to organize extra curriculum activities on regular basis to familiar the younger generation with national heritage, art and culture. Earlier, AIOU students participated in Husne-e-Qiraat, Na’at and National Songs competitions held in connection with Pakistan Day celebrations. In Husne-e-Qiraat contest, Hafiz Muhammad Ayub bagged first position, while Adil Nawaz and Umair Rashid secured send and third positions respectively. In Na’at competition, Sanam Mumtaz got first position, whereas Nauman Adil and Mazhar Husain secured second and third positions respectively. In National Songs contest, Waseem Bashir clinched first position, Sanam Mumtaz and Iqra Noor bagged second and third positions respectively. VC AIOU Dr Sangi distributed prizes among the position holders and appreciated talent of the students, urging them to always follow Islamic teachings and way of life of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) besides keeping in mind sacrifices of martyrs in routine matters. “All these things are must to develop a civilized society,” he added. Principal of the Islamia School presented souvenirs to AIOU VC Dr Nazir Ahmed Sangi, Regional Director Muhammad Aslam, Dean Rashid A. Naeem and Director Admission Zia Hasnain Naqvi.
