Vicki Leon writes a somewhat tongue-in-cheek Op-Ed piece about a preference for the more socially conscious Greek practice of liturgy, whereby politicians would pledge personal wealth for the completion of public works and programs, over the overt auctioning and granting of the title of Roman Emperor to the highest bidder, sometimes with dire consequences. Rather than seriously considering these limited choices I think it most important to point out that neither empire survived to defend either practice. They imploded and collapsed from their own weight. Sound familiar?
