Victoria Falls hotel turns 110: Stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sector say meeting the target of contributing US$5 billion to the national fiscus by 2018 will depend on the ability to provide high standards of service. Victoria Falls hotel has celebrated its 110th anniversary amid calls to maintain high standards if the tourism and hospitality sector is to meet the target of contributing US$5 billion dollars to the fiscus by 2018. The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Cde Walter Mzembi, who addressed guests at the occasion, said high standards will facilitate an increase in tourist arrivals from the current levels to US$5 million per annum by 2018. Commending the hotel management for successfully portraying a positive image of the country by attracting high profile personalities from across the globe, Cde Mzembi challenged them to brace for more competition as new hotels will be constructed on a piece of land that has been allocated to his ministry to modernise the resort town. The hotel’s management expressed gratitude to government, various arms in the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, as well as employees for their commitment and support, and pledged to ensure that high quality service is maintained. The hotel first opened its doors to the public in June, 1904. It has played host to big names such as Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and the Dubai Royal Family, among others. It served as the venue for the official opening of the 20th session of the UNWTO General Assembly in August last year and is expected to be the venue for the official opening ceremony of the SADC Heads of States Summit in August.
