Video: 20 years of Paul Scholes This Sunday, 21 September, marks 20 years since Paul Scholes made his Manchester United debut against Port Vale in the League Cup. That seminal match, in which the teenager scored twice in a 2-1 win, announced to the world one of the best and unique talents British football has produced in the modern era. Scholes went on to make 718 appearances for the Reds during 19 seasons as a player, scoring 155 goals – and there are some absolute belters in his showreel of strikes. There was more to Scholes’ game than just goals however – his outstanding passing range and sublime vision prompted former Reds assistant manager Carlos Queiroz to poetically liken having Paul in the team to “playing with the lights switched on”. Scholes illuminated and influenced a whole generation of footballers, from team-mates who gleefully played alongside him each day in training, to those who gladly watched with interest from afar or up close in European encounters. Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Zinedine Zidane will all wax lyrical about our former no.18. Zidane famously remarked: “There is no doubt to me that Paul Scholes is in a class of his own. One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my playing career.” To mark the occasion, you can watch just some of his best bits for United in our video montage above. Thanks for the memories, Scholesy!
