Video Surveillance Topic: Complete Essay Question In many cities the use of video cameras in public places is being increased in order to reduce crime, but some people believe that these measures restrict our individual freedom. Do the benefits of increased security outweigh the drawbacks? Complete Essay It is a noticeable truth that video surveillance has become normal in recent years throughout various global cites. While I understand that critics would see this as a very serious threat to privacy, I believe that there are too many benefits than drawbacks. On the one hand, using surveillance cameras potentially increases security in the areas where they are placed. Often this is because cameras can act as a deterrent to crime and bad behaviour. For example, a camera installed in a workplace area may prevent an employee from doing something that would generally be considered as wrong. In addition, I think that when cameras are installed on public streets they may deter would be criminals from acting out. If criminal activity does take place, the surveillance cameras may provide law enforcement officials with the information they need to take legal action to make an arrest. In today’s digital age, law enforcement officials and employers may find it easier than ever to take advantage of video surveillance, and the fact that they now line many public streets and workplace locations could lead to safer conditions for everyone. On the other hand, the biggest disadvantage of camera surveillance is the perceived issue of an invasion of privacy. In many cases, surveillance cameras do not require legal authorization and this fact leads to many areas being filmed when perhaps it is not necessary. Also, I feel that if no permission needs to be granted, aren’t people’s rights being diminished by being recorded when they are unaware of it? Another drawback is the potential for poor quality recordings. The incorrect interpretation of a barely visible video could result in the suspicion, or prosecution, of the wrong person. To conclude, video surveillance has become commonplace in many cities in recent years. While I understand that critics may see this as an invasion of privacy, I believe that there are more potential benefits compared to the drawbacks.
