Video sampler Excerpts from videos: Mama, short film, 6 min. 30 sec. , 2013 In Mama, an adolescent girl awakes with the darkness of wanting to find her mother. Her journey is filled with epic references - meeting with foretelling strangers, traveling to distant lands, a clairvoyant bird guide and a fateful boat ride. Her quest ends with tragedy and finally finding her mother. Original music by Russell Pinkston Theme and Variations, stop motion animation, 10 min. 30 sec., 2013 Theme and Variations is a stop motion animation by Yuliya Lanina that features music by Olivier Messiaen performed by violinist Tatiana Berman and pianist Irina Botan. Painted images of anthropomorphic creatures are set in motion against a lush background of cloudy skies and green pastures, their movement hewing closely to the music. Unlike the composer who uses the variations form to reveal a world in a grain of sand, Lanina plays it in reverse -- by zooming out. The fabled inhabitants of the multifarious realm are then shown to be fragments of one consciousness, that of a Cupid-eagle longing for a Psyche-butterfly. Lanina paints the characters, than animates them frame by frame on the computer in Adobe Flash program. Even though the process is very tedious and painstaking, the end result is an animated painting in which the characters come to life creating a concurrent narrative to the nature-inspired music composition. Mishka, short film, 4 min. 43 sec., 2008 Mishka is a playful depiction of human nature and of our culture. In Mishka we follow a creature possessing both human and teddy bear attributes as he lives a life of voyeurism and complacency in a cabaret setting. Although he does not involve himself in the lewd mechanized behavior of the environment he is content to remain immobile in his life. He is presented with an opportunity to better his existence when he is carried off to a land of innocence. However, his greed overcomes all other desires and he is instantly transported to an environment full of evil and hellish things, and is condemned to a life of senseless mechanization. He is robbed of his (unitilized) freedom he had possessed in the cabaret, and is instead damned to the same mechanized fate of its characters. Original music by Jeremy Kasha Dodo-Valse, stop motion animation, 2 min. 30 sec., 2011 Dodo-Valse depicts a vision of an idyllic past as seen through the eye of a forest deity. Blue skies and green pastures serve as a backdrop to scenes of Arcadian bliss, where anthropomorphized plants and animals live and love in a world of heavenly utopia. But the vision is ephemeral – the skies are fragile, the grass is synthetic, the Big Fish is hungry, and only the porcupines make it out alive.
