Video shows PDP lawmaker firing shots during celebrations National Conference wants action against lawmaker SRINAGAR -- An amateur video footage has surfaced showing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA, Ashraf Mir, from the Sonawar constituency, brandishing an AK-47 rifle openly during poll victory celebrations. The video footage, which was taken on the day of counting of poll results, shows Mir holding an AK-47 and firing gun shots celebrating his win after defeating former chief minister Omar Abdullah. This video has surfaced in the midst of efforts to form a government in the state witnessing backdoor consultations among parties. The elections results threw a fractured mandate for the 87-member state assembly with the PDP securing 28 seats in the recently-held five-phased assembly elections, while the BJP bagged 25. National Conference (NC) condemned the incident of newly elected PDP leader for resorting to firing by an AK-47 amid a crowd. NC spokesperson, Junaid Azim Mattu said such reckless, unlawful behavior from an elected lawmaker was unfortunate and unacceptable, especially in a region that had just recovered from a prolonged phase of turmoil. How can an MLA resort to firing a gun in broad daylight? Apparently the gun was handed over to Mir by a personal security officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Mattu said. This is not the first time Mir has misused his personal security. More recently, Mir used his PSOs to conduct illegal search operations and beat up innocent people in Shalimar, the night before the elections in Srinagar, the spokesperson said. Mattu said, however, Mir was allowed to go scot-free that time by a particular police officer. Now, once again there is video evidence of Mir violating the law by firing the service weapon of a policeman. It remains to be seen if the police will at least try to act or will yet again turn a blind eye towards Mirs unlawful behavior, Mattu said.
