Al amanecer del día 14 de nisán, se reunió en pleno el Sanedrín. Este tribunal decidió atar a Jesús y enviarlo al gobernador romano Poncio Pilato, quien, después de interrogarlo, no halló en él ninguna culpabilidad. Pilato dirigió la palabra a los numerosos judíos que habían acudido ante él y les ofreció ponerles en libertad a Jesús, pero ellos gritaron en respuesta: “¡Al madero con él!”. De hecho, prefirieron que soltara en su lugar a un delincuente llamado Barrabás. Queriendo complacerlos, Pilato lo liberó y ordenó que Jesús fuera azotado y clavado en un madero (Mar. 15:1-15). En conformidad con estas palabras proféticas, “los sacerdotes principales y todo el Sanedrín buscaban testimonio falso contra Jesús a fin de darle muerte” (Mat. 26:59). “Muchos, en realidad, testificaban falsamente contra él, pero sus testimonios no estaban de acuerdo.” (Mar. 14:56.) Tan rabiosos estaban los enemigos de Cristo que no dudaron en recurrir a declaraciones falsas para lograr que lo mataran. A causa de la transgresión de mi pueblo sufrió la herida. Marcos 15:1-15 E inmediatamente al rayar el alba los sacerdotes principales tuvieron consulta con los ancianos y los escribas, aun todo el Sanedrín, y ataron a Jesús y se lo llevaron y lo entregaron a Pilato. De modo que Pilato le hizo la pregunta: “¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?”. En respuesta, él le dijo: “Tú mismo [lo] dices”. Pero los sacerdotes principales procedieron a acusarlo de muchas cosas. Entonces Pilato se puso a interrogarlo de nuevo, diciendo: “¿No respondes nada? ¡Mira cuántas acusaciones hacen contra ti!”. Pero Jesús ya no respondió más, de manera que Pilato se maravillaba. Ahora bien, de fiesta en fiesta este solía ponerles en libertad un preso, que ellos solicitaban. Por entonces el llamado Barrabás estaba en cadenas con los sediciosos, que en su sedición habían cometido asesinato. De modo que la muchedumbre se presentó y comenzó a hacer petición según lo que él solía hacer para ellos. Pilato les respondió, y dijo: “¿Quieren que les ponga en libertad al rey de los judíos?”. Pues se daba cuenta de que por envidia lo habían entregado los sacerdotes principales. Pero los sacerdotes principales excitaron a la muchedumbre para que les pusiera en libertad a Barrabás, más bien. Respondiendo de nuevo, Pilato les decía: “Entonces, ¿qué haré con el que ustedes llaman rey de los judíos?”. Otra vez clamaron: “¡Al madero con él!”. Pero Pilato les decía: “Pues, ¿qué mal ha hecho?”. Pero ellos clamaron más y más: “¡Al madero con él!”. Con eso, Pilato, deseando satisfacer a la muchedumbre, les puso en libertad a Barrabás, y, habiendo hecho que le dieran latigazos a Jesús, lo entregó para que fuera fijado en un madero. Accused and Smitten The Messiah would be tried and condemned. (Read Isaiah 53:8.) At dawn on Nisan 14, the entire Sanhedrin met, had Jesus bound, and handed him over to Roman Governor Pontius Pilate. He questioned Jesus and found him guilty of nothing at all. When Pilate offered to release Jesus, however, the crowd shouted: “Impale him!” and called for the freeing of the criminal Barabbas. Wishing to satisfy the throng, Pilate released Barabbas, had Jesus whipped, and handed him over to be impaled.—Mark 15:1-15. False witnesses would testify against the Messiah. “Violent witnesses rise up,” said the psalmist David. “What I have not known they ask me.” (Ps. 35:11) True to prophecy, “the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin were looking for false witness against Jesus in order to put him to death.” (Matt. 26:59) In fact, “many, indeed, were giving false witness against him, but their testimonies were not in agreement.” (Mark 14:56) Lying testimony mattered little to Jesus’ rabid enemies, who sought his death. Now Pilate began questioning him again, saying: “Have you no reply to make? See how many charges they are bringing against you.” But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate began to marvel. Well, from festival to festival he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they petitioned for. At the time there was the so-called Bar•ab´bas in bonds with the seditionists, who in their sedition had committed murder. So the crowd came on up and started to make petition according to what he used to do for them. Pilate responded to them, saying: “Do YOU want me to release to YOU the king of the Jews?” For he was aware that because of envy the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Bar•ab´bas to them, instead. Again in reply Pilate was saying to them: “What, then, shall I do with him whom YOU call the king of the Jews?” Once more they cried out: “Impale him!” But Pilate went on to say to them: “Why, what bad thing did he do?” Still they cried out all the more: “Impale him!” At that Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Bar•ab´bas to them, and, after having Jesus whipped, he handed him over to be impaled.
