Vietnam, Japan should strengthen defense, security ties for regional peace: Deputy PM TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 10/11/2014 19:04 GMT + 7 Vietnam and Japan should enhance cooperation in defense and security to help maintain peace, stability, and development in their region in the context of complicated regional and global situations, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said. The Vietnamese official, who arrived in Japan for a five-day visit on October 9, made the statement during his talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Friday, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Deputy PM Phuc also called for stronger bilateral judicial cooperation and suggested that Japan assist Vietnam in training lawyers. He expressed his wish that Japan will continue providing official development assistance to Vietnam in the 2014 fiscal year, while expanding bilateral cooperative ties in agriculture – especially offshore tuna fishing – and helping Vietnam build a quality system for farm produce and improve agricultural value chains. The Vietnamese official also urged the Japanese government to pay more attention to the project to build an aerospace center and launch an earth observation satellite in Vietnam so that it can be implemented on schedule, as agreed between the two governments. In reply, PM Abe affirmed the importance of Vietnam in Japan’s external policy and vowed that he will try his best to speed up bilateral cooperation projects, including those on judicial reform, trade, agriculture, and support industries. He expressed his hope that the two sides will further strengthen people-to-people contacts through sending Vietnamese nurses and apprentices to Japan and simplifying visa procedures. PM Abe also asserted that Japan is working with related countries in order to execute the aerospace cooperation plan with Vietnam soon. Also on Friday, Deputy PM Phuc had a meeting with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and witnessed the signing of a letter of intent between the JICA and the Vietnamese Ministry of Justice on technical support for the Southeast Asian country’s legal and judicial reforms from next year to 2020. A JICA representative presented a certificate of merit to Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong to acknowledge his great contribution to the development of the Vietnam-Japan judicial partnership during the past 20 years.
