U.S. Congress Passes ABLE Act to Permit Qualified Individuals with Disabilities to Save On December 16, 2014, the U.S. Congress passed the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act. The ABLE Act would allow individuals who acquire a significant disability before age 26 to save money for many disability-related expenses such as education, transportation, or employment without jeopardizing important health or income supports. Individuals who meet this criteria and already receive benefits under SSI and/or SSDI will be automatically eligible to establish an ABLE account. Individuals who are not currently receiving SSI or SSDI, but meet the age of disability onset requirement, could still be eligible to open an ABLE account. 3. Celebrating ADA 25 Year Anniversary Letter from Kennedy Center on Performing Arts re: Works by Emerging Young Artists with Disabilities. You can host this traveling display! Click here to see their work! Dear Colleagues- I would like to offer you the opportunity to host an arts exhibition featuring work by 15 emerging young artists with disabilities (ages 16 – 25), titled The Journey. And, what is really wonderful, is that it can come to your community at almost no cost to you because of the generous support of Volkswagen Group of America and the Kennedy Center’s Office of VSA and Accessibility. This professionally produced exhibit - highlighting the skills, abilities and talents of these young artists on the cusp of their careers - will be on tour for one year starting in February 2015. It can easily be one of the many events you present in your community celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The exhibit catalogue is attached. It has images of the artwork, sizes and medium, and an artist statement from each young artist ( if you require any of this information in another format please feel free to contact us). This tour exhibit gives visibility to the work of artists with disabilities throughout the United States, cementing their work in the broader context of the history, art, and culture of the American—as well as global—experience. If you are interested, would like more information about the financial support that we are able to provide, or would simply like to talk to someone about how to bring this exhibit to your community, please feel free to contact my colleague, Rachael Nease at (202) 416-8823 or by email [email protected] Also do not hesitate to contact me directly! I’m so excited to be able to offer this exhibit, especially as it can be connected to the 25th Anniversary of the ADA and the 40th Anniversary of VSA. Also, feel free to share this offer to other colleagues of yours that you think might be interested in hosting this exhibit. Betty Siegel Director, Office of VSA & Accessibility The John F.
