Views of the Shiva Temple and the Sarpakkavu associated with the temple at Kannamangalam, Malappuram Dt., Kerala. This temple belonged to the Thonniyil Family who were the local administrators of Kannamangalam during the Samoodiri rule. My father, who was the head of this family for several years managed this temple! Childhood memories of the three days annual festival, consisting of two days of Bhagavathi Kalam pattu and one day of Ayyappan pattu, keep flashing in, with nostalgic feelings! The most enchanting part of this festival was the large, beautiful and colorful images of Bhagavathi/ Ayyappan drawn on the floor using various organic color dusts by the artists before the conduct of Kalam Pattu and the eventual wiping off of the Kalam by the Velichappadu through rhythmic dancing to the tunes of Chenda and other percussion instruments. Kalam Pattu is a devotional ritual prevailing in various temples, in Kerala.
