Vijayawada to be Andhra Pradeshs new capital News 24×7 The city of Vijayawada was on Thursdsy named the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu told the assembly that the government has decided to locate the capital at central place of the state around Vijayawada. Naidu said the decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting September 1. The naming of a new capital for Andhra Pradesh was due on Tuesday but Naidu had junked his plans of announcing the name due to auspicious reasons. So the naming was revealed on Dashami which falls on Thursday. There was speculation that the government would declare the state capital between Vijayawada and Guntur. However, the was rejected by the Sivaramakrishnan Committee, appointed to look for a new capital. The five-member panel headed by former Urban Development Secretary K Sivaramakrishnan had ruled in favour of Donakonda in Prakasam district, about 175 km south of Vijayawada. But Naidu was said to be not keen on it, saying a capital cannot be created in the middle of nowhere with no airport or other facilities. Telugu Desam Party MP Rayapati Sambasiva Rao also alleged that the Sivaramakrishnan committee had not done proper groundwork and had picked Donakonda without even visiting the town. Andhra Pradesh will share Hyderabad as a capital with Telangana, carved out of the state earlier this year, for the next 10 years.
