Village The Pharoahs is one of several recordings Joe Bonner did with Pharoah Sanders when he was in his band in the 70s... On this particular cut, Mansion Worlds, it features Joe on a beautiful intro that sets up a wonderful groove played by my Godfather Jimmi Esspirit, f.k.a. Jimmy Hopps on the drums...Just as the vibe really starts to settle in, Pharoah joins in & plays a wonderful counter melody....then in classic Pharoah fashion, they all start to fly into that other dimension of freedom that this band had the amazing ability to... That kind of freedom, also practiced by John Coltrane, Woody Shaw, Archie Shepp, Rashaan Roland Kirk, & a plethora of other related musicians from that era, always baffled critics. Most of these records received negative reviews from underqualified critics that were threatened by what they couldnt understand. Spirituality, Freedom, & Truth!! ..& guess what!?...No one can critique that! ...Now when one goes back & listens to these wonderful recordings, it is clear how deeply powerful & poignant the music really was & still is. Many people forget to put this music in its proper perspective. This music was all going down during the Civil Rights era, & was a reflection of the world happening around & to these iconic artists. Taking that into consideration, one can see the obvious sacrifice of ego & the embrace of truth these cats achieved in music! That is the ultimate musical height that one could ever hope to accomplish, ....& these cats did it time & time again! That is part of what makes Joe Boner who he was, & still is every time you hear the music!! https://youtube/watch?v=XpCe2ilgSdc
