Vince Mancuso read the local papers and today issued a follow up to yesterdays newsletter. I concur with him in that the majority of our friends south of I-20 are not to blame for the ongoing effort to isolate and capture the tax revenues of wealthy retirees. I hear regularly from my friends within the gates and they are adamantly opposed to any one group of young parents, or any one public school, claiming special rights and privilege to their tax dollars. Heres what Vince says: Schools Matter: The Greene County School Wars have begun in earnest and the recent election changes dramatically who is stocking all of the ammunition. Consider this quote of discontent in the LON: “The people who are ravaging and have under assault students and institutions are those with the rapacious appetites that sit south of Interstate 20 who say we’ll take care of ours first, and then if there’s anything left over, will allow it to trickle down.” What’s this all about? Why do they think so poorly of some of us (yet, a majority south of I-20 favor an improved GCHS and NOT a second high school)? Best I can tell, ESPLOST is currently $1.78M under funded so all projects can’t be funded at this time. The Committee recommends that the money collected so far be distributed like this: $3.5M to LOA, some of which will be spent on learning cottages that will house a duplicate and unwanted high school currently in operation. The paltry, by comparison, remainder of $750K will go for security projects (not a high parent priority) at the other four schools. Those north of I-20 say that is unashamedly unfair and they are dead right. The LOA high school is a contentious issue yet to be decided (even thoughthis ESPLOST passed back then) by GC citizens in terms of monetary support (LOA is currently chartered to be a K-12 school, many object. K-12 charter comes up for precarious renewal in 2015). A serious debate regarding an LOA high school is required and the decision left to the incoming BOE elected by the people precisely for this reason (or a county-wide referendum?) Commencing in 2015 representatives of those who may share the feelings stated in the above quote, take charge. There could be hell to pay. In other BOE business, the rest of the county is waiting for LOA to submit its next year calendar. A majority want a coordinated calendar. Tucker responded (in a display of non-cooperation) “I will do what’s best for LOA.” Is that anything like “taking care of ours first?”---
