Vindra trial yet to begin AT LEAST two more weeks are needed until the murder trial into the death of businesswoman Vindra Naipaul-Coolman is set to begin at the High Court in Port of Spain. The matter came up for hearing at the Second Criminal Court of the Hall of Justice yesterday, but was later adjourned to October 2 by Justice Malcolm Holdip. The adjournment was to facilitate further legal arguments by attorneys for both the State and accused men prior to the start of the trial. Jurors have already been selected to hear evidence in the matter and were present at the High Court. However, they were not allowed into the courtroom during the submissions. The judge later informed the jurors the reason behind the delay in having the trial started as scheduled. He said this was as a result of the “fresh new case management” in the matter which was being embarked upon. In all, 18 jurors would be hearing evidence in the matter. There are 12 jurors on the main panel, and six alternates. Holdip ordered the jurors to return to the Hall of Justice on October 2, when “things might happen, things could happen, things should happen”. On trial for Naipaul-Coolman’s murder are: Allan Martin, Shervon Peters, Keida Garcia, brothers Marlon and Earl Trimmingham, Ronald Armstrong, Antonio Charles, Joel Fraser, Lyndon James, Devon Peters, Anthony Dwayne Gloster and Jamille Garcia. Attorneys from the Legal Aid and Advisory Board have been appointed to represent the men, while senior counsel Israel Khan, Gilbert Peterson and Dana Seetahal are representing the State. On December 19, 2006, Naipaul-Coolman, 52, was kidnapped from the driveway of her Lange Park, Chaguanas, home. A ransom demand was eventually made for her safe release and some of it was paid, but she was not freed. It was subsequently announced at a police news conference that Naipaul-Coolman was dead.
