Vinson AC Team 2, SUMMIT DAY SUCCESS! 23 Dec, 2014. It was a cold, cold summit day today. Leaving at 8:30 the team, facing into bitter winds gusting at 20 knots (~40 km/h) and -28°c. I am not sure what that is in wind chill, but it means any part of the body, face or hands exposed was at risk frostbite. That was a major concern, so stops were short and infrequent. We reached the summit at 3 pm and the ensuing jubilation was somewhat muted by the face masks, and failure of several cameras in the cold. There are summit shots, but none available for this dispatch. They will show a group of red duvet jackets, with black face masks, against a brilliant Antarctic background. It will be difficult to guess who is who. We were all back in camp a little before 6 pm. This is now the last of the seven summits for our lovely Nepalese womens team and the first for AP. A very fine effort all round. The forecast for tomorrow is rather fierce, 25-30 knot winds here, but that should not stop us descending to base camp. We hope not, anyway.
