Violence is something we should discourage because it harms - TopicsExpress

Violence is something we should discourage because it harms innocent people more often than the guilty. Two incidents which have recently happened should make us think. Abdul Karim Tunda according to some newspapers claims to have links both with ISI and Naxals. It does not matter if the accusation is true as far as the common man is concerned. As the Naxals and their sympathizers hardly ever condemn violence people will believe this accusation and point out the number of policemen and others killed while doing their duty. Violence will thus be detrimental to the cause of the Naxals ( I am assuming it to be social and economic justice) as people will turn against them after this ‘confession’. The other is the thrashing of the train driver of the Rajyarani Express who ran over the pilgrims at Dhamara Ghat Railway station. The train was on the tracks and the driver had a clear signal. The train cannot be brought to a sudden halt when a driver sees someone on the tracks. It is not his fault that someone gets run over. It is either the mistake of the railway authorities or the state government that the incident took place. There was probably not enough police, no railway over bridge to cross the tracks or the pilgrims broke the law and were on the tracks. The driver’s fault would be minimal. Yet he may lose his life for almost no fault of his. And this happens because we resort to violence at the drop a hat. And let us not forget the 84 and Godhra riots. Yes punish the guilty but do spare the innocent.
