Violence over recovery of 2 girls’ bodies in Azara. GUWAHATI – Locals of Azara and adjoining areas today took to the streets in large numbers registering their protest following recovery of bodies of two girls in Jogipara area under mysterious circumstances last night. The protest grew intense as the day progressed, forcing security forces to resort to lathicharge on the irate public who blocked roads and vandalised public properties. While locals alleged it to be a case of rape and murder, prima facie evidence, according to police, indicates it to be a case of accidental deaths, following which the bodies were reportedly dumped. Police said things will get clearer after the arrival of the post-mortem reports. The bodies are yet to be identified till the time of filing of this report. Earlier today, police had picked up four persons for their direct and indirect involvement in the incident. Those detained include the driver of a WagonR hatchback in which the two girls were reportedly picked up from VIP area (near LGBI airport) by Kishore Das, the driver and his friend Golap Barman during late night hours of October 22. Senior Superintendent of Police (City) AP Tiwari said, “From whatever we have gathered during the preliminary investigation and after recording and corroborating the statements of the four accused with circumstantial evidences, it appears to be a case of accident following which the bodies were dumped near the railway track in Jogipara area by the accused.” Das, the driver of the vehicle bearing registration number AS 01 DC 8086, told investigators that after picking up the girls, with whom they had acquaintance, he drove the car to the house of one Nripen Das, another friend of theirs, where they stayed for some time and also had dinner. While returning, their vehicle met with an accident in which one of the girls died on the spot and the other sustained grievous injuries. The driver, who also received injuries, rang up Apurba Boro, the owner of the vehicle and apprised him about the incident. “The owner reacted sharply and told the driver to handle the situation on his own. Meanwhile, after battling with her wounds for about 40 minutes, the injured girl too succumbed to her injuries. At this, the driver decided to dump the bodies in Jogipara area,” Tiwari told media- persons quoting the statements of the driver recorded with the investigators. “We have examined the place of occurrence and recorded the statements of the accused as well. Investigation is on and we are looking for eyewitnesses of the incident, if there were any,” Tiwari said. Meanwhile, various organisations, including BJP and AGP, and individuals have condemned the incident and demanded an impartial probe into the incident.
