Virender Sehwag lovingly called as Viru, nawab of Nafazgarh or the Zen master of modern cricket is the opening batsman of Indian cricket team. He is right handed batsman and part time right arm off spinner bowler. He was born in a joint Jat family of Haryana and spent his childhood there only. History of Cricket in his life begins from his childhood only. His father attributes his interest in cricket to a toy bat gifted to Sehwag when he was just seven months old. From his school days he wanted to pursue his career in cricket as he was not academically sound and handling all family restrictions he continued playing the cricket. Domestic Cricket: In 1997-98 season he made his debut for Delhi cricket team in first class cricket. He was selected for Duleep trophy for 1998-99 season from North zone cricket team and ranked fourth on the score list of Duleep trophy including a 274 highest score in the competition hitted against South zone in 327 balls and then a rapid 187 from 175 balls in Ranji trophy against Punjab. He was selected then for U-19 team for South Africa tour. His consistency attracted the selectors and he became regular member in National team. even after becoming an international player he continued playing for Delhi in domestic cricket when not occupied with international matches. One Day International In 1999 he played his first One day International match at Mohali against Pakistan in April 1999 but it was a poor start of Sehwags ODI career as he could score 1 run only. His bowling performance also proved ineffective and expensive conceding 35 runs in 3 overs only. Now Viru was to wait for second chance and that he got in 2000 for home series against Zimbabwe. He could prove himself in his 4th ODI in 2001 against Australia in Bangalore where he scored 58 off 54 balls combined with three wickets. After that Sehwag was never needed to turn back. His scoring rate is very quick, at 103.44 runs per 100 balls and he has had more success in run chases and 7 of his 13 centuries he scored while chasing. Test career: Viru was selected in Test cricket team in 2001. His maiden century in mid-2001 against Sri Lanka couldnt bring selection for him in test team for corresponding series. He made his test debut in late 2001 in playing eleven against South Africa as middle order batsman and scored 105 runs. Sehwag has scored two triple centuries and 5 wickets. His excellent performance has made him regular opening batsman for Indian test team. He is the only Indian to be honored as Wisden Leading cricketer in the world for his performance in year 2008.
