Virginia Beauty - This antique apple originated before the year 1820 in southwestern Virginia. It is highly prized for its fresh eating qualities and as a dessert apple. It is medium to large with a shiny red skin. The flesh is fine grained, juicy and sweet. The apple ripens here mid-late September. Red Rebel - Another antique variety with origin in Virginia around the year 1850. The apple is beautiful red and medium to large. The flesh is firm and mildly sweet. The tree is highly disease resistant. Fruit ripens early September. American Golden Russet - originated before the year 1800. The apple has been described as having a rusty gold sometimes bronze color. It is known for making cider due to its sugary juice. The apple is also excellent for fresh eating out of hand. It is a medium size apple which ripens here from mid September to early October. Mutsu - (modern) This is a very large greenish-yellow apple. The flesh is firm and has a sweet/tart flavor. It stores quite well and is considered a good choice for a multi-purpose apple. An interesting note about this variety is its pollen is sterile so it will not pollinate other varieties. Ripens here mid September. A popular apple in the fall at the apple houses! Goldrush - Another modern variety. This apple has a very unique sweet and tart flavor making it very popular. The flesh is firm and crisp. The tree produces fruit early in age and is a very dependable bearer requiring you to thin apples in the early spring most years.The apples are a yellow/gold color, medium to large in size and will store for months in refrigeration. Fruit ripens late September to early October. This is one of our favorites!
