Daily classes will be taught by the VIRGINIA’s licensed officers and participants will practice the lessons while standing watch alongside the professional crew. This is an excellent opportunity for those who own a boat and want to improve their skills, or for novices who just want to learn the history and application of traditional navigation. Inland Navigation From: Norfolk, VA To: Philadelphia, PA Board: 1900 Sunday, October 6 Depart: 1700 Thursday, October 10 Cost: $800/person Join the VIRGINIA as she navigates her way up the entire Chesapeake Bay and through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Learn about the skills necessary to safely navigate your own vessel, including radar, line of position fixes, deduced reckoning, and running fixes. Work alongside the crew of VIRGINIA as they sail the ship northward and practice your newly learned navigational skills. The 24th Annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race October 14 to 20, 2013, Baltimore, Maryland, to Portsmouth, Virginia Embark: Baltimore, MD, Wednesday October 16 at 0900 Disembark: Portsmouth, VA, Saturday October 19 at 1200 Established to promote public awareness of the Chesapeake’s rich maritime heritage and the preservation of the bay’s natural resources, the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race originates in Baltimore, Maryland, and finishes in Portsmouth, Virginia. Pre-race festivities in Baltimore include a parade of sail in the inner harbor and a pre-race dinner for all participants and crews. Racing begins in earnest on Thursday morning as dozens of schooners set sail for the start just beyond the Annapolis bridge, and race 127 nautical miles to the finish line at the Thimble Shoals Light. Post-race activities in Portsmouth include a Saturday picnic and awards ceremony and open deck tours of many of the ships. Proceeds of the event support the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. VIRGINIA, by the way, holds the course record of 11 hours, 18 minutes, and 53 seconds set in 2007. Depart: Photography Sail with Schooner VIRGINIA & PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II From: Norfolk, VA To: Cambridge, MD Board: 1900 Sunday, October 20 Depart: 1700 Wednesday, October 23 Cost: $800/person Attention photographers! Come aboard for a three day, three night excursion aboard the most beautiful boats of the Chesapeake Bay – schooner VIRGINIA and PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II, as they sail from Norfolk, VA to Cambridge, MD. Have your camera ready as the two ships spread their canvas aloft and cruise their way up the Bay. Photographers will be able to jump from one ship to the other over the course of the trip, and capture images from every angle imaginable – from above and below deck, up in the rigging, aboard the small pulling boats, and from shore while at anchor. The captains and crew will be happy to work with you to ensure you get the perfect shot. All participating photographers will submit their favorite photo to be featured in a special exhibit at the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia.
