Visited my mom tonight. As I was leaving, I turned the corner and there was a man, hunched over a walker, doing his best to stay ahead of me....Sooooo, I looked over at him and said, Ill race ya!! LOL. He laughed....like a real belly laugh and looked up at me and said, Sure, but you will beat me!! And so I walked with him through the halls up to the main door. He said he had been healthy his whole life and about 3 years ago, he got cancer. He told me the kind of cancer, but it was a big long medical name I do not remember, but he said it was in his spinal column. He said he does laps daily, and this was his 6th lap today. I asked him his name, and he stopped and looked up at me, and said, John. My name is John. It was like he was taken by surprise to actually have a real conversation. Anyway, I told him my mom was there and that I would likely see him again. I left smiling and he stood and watched me leave the building. I love seeing my mom, but I also love these brief interactions with other residents there as well. I realize just how much I have to be so super thankful for, when I hear the stories of these folks and see the condition their bodies are in. It is awesome to get to know the elderly.
