Visited my village recently. I was saddened to see the sad demise of community work. Gone are the days when the villagers collectively used to clear paths leading to the jhumland, rivers and other places on self-help basis. Now, they have become so used to this spoon-feeding culture that they demand government sanction for every work. Even the spirit of house construction and other community work is as good as death. Most of the salaried villagers and moneyed public leaders build their dwelling houses on payment. Here, whose head is on the chopping block? Of course, the poor villagers. Neither they have the money nor the fellow villagers to help them in construction of their houses. Indeed times are changing for the better for the rich and worse for the poor majority.........The village life doesnt have the old charm. The villagers have themselves become so materialistic, individualistic and of course divided by the murky politics. They are no longer the simpletons who were not affected at all by the sea change thats is taking place everywhere.
