Visited the State Parliament of the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine Westphalia) in its capital Düsseldorf and toured with parliamentarians. Germany has 16 States: this state, NRW, has 21% of Germanys 82 million population and the largest Muslim concentration. Its annual state budget is 65 billion dollars. While Cologne is the culture hub, Düsseldorf, where we have been staying, is considered the ritzy chic alternative. After Jumah, I Visited with Turkish youth (pictured below) at a local mosque to contrast with meetings weve had with German officials from government and police departments who had a lot to say about them. All the youth I talked to were born and raised here as 2nd or 3rd generation and speak perfect German, but all declined to call themselves German. Some said they were integrated but refused to be assimilated. Exploring the subject of Muslim immigrants in Germany was a core part of this trip and I feel I learned a lot. It is too complex to analyze on a Facebook post but if friends are interested I could write a column about my reading of it.
