Visitors erase hometown advantage in Mt Coolum Men’s Open Adam Rydwanski from Headland GC has won the 2014 Mt Coolum Men’s Open, holding off all hometown challengers and a handful of visitors to claim a one stroke victory. With the predicted heavy rain and storms thankfully staying away, the course was beautifully presented, albeit a little boggy in a few places off the fairway due to the heavy rains on Saturday. The heavy track didn’t bother the visiting players though as Rydwanski finished with a two-over-par 73, closely followed by Grant Kimmorley from Horton Park, and a fast finishing Troy Scott from Nudgee – who hit a day’s best two-over-par 34 on the back nine, and finished with 2-under for the last three holes, slipping into third overall. Although the course was good underfoot, the heavy cloud cover made conditions hot and humid, and the hometown players struggled to adapt to the conditions as well as the entrants from visiting clubs, as there were only three Mt Coolum members in the final top 10 gross scores. Young Luke Parker was the top scorer for Mt Coolum, with the student member shooting a 75 gross. In good news for the host club, KR Smith won the SCGZ Senior Men’s Championship with a score of 81. Dain Stone also won the SCGZ Senior Men’s nett category (on countback) with a 71 nett.
