Visualization of how Earth actually moves through space We typically think of the earths motion in space as roughly elliptical. In that conception, in our orbit around the sun, we come back to the same place every 365 and some change days. But in reality we never return to the same place, because while we orbit the sun, our sun orbits the galactic center of the Milky Way, and the Milky Way orbits within a cluster of other nearby galaxies.
