Vitamin D - Naturally Produced Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Cholecalciferol and ergocalciferol can be ingested from the diet and from supplements. The body can also synthesize vitamin D (specifically cholecalciferol) in the skin, from cholesterol, when sun exposure is adequate (hence its nickname, the "sunshine vitamin"). Vitamin D is unusual because it is the only vitamin that can be synthesized in the body. Sunlight is the main source of Vitamin D, though sunscreen lotions with high SPF can prevent vitamin D formation. Vitamin D is also the only vitamin that is a hormone. It helps mainly in bone maturation, prevention of cancer, prevention of rheumatic arthritis, stabilizes the immune system, and prevent osteoporosis (ترقق العظام) Sources of Vit. D The main sources of Vitamin D are the foods and the sunlight. The main foods that are rich in Vitamin D includes: 1- Fish sources (Tuna, Sole fish) 2- Milk (especially those fortified with Vitamin D) 3- Cereals (Especially fortified with Vitamin D) 4- Eggs 5- Mushrooms 6- Beef Liver 7- Ricotta Cheese In addition, exposure to sunlight for 30 minutes per day is enough to produce your daily needs of Vitamin D.
