Vitamin D Expert Post from Wendy Elverson, RD, LDN: Did you know that many studies are showing an inverse relationship between vitamin D levels and severity of atopic dermatitis? The primary source of vitamin D is direct sunlight. The sun produces UV radiation that can increase skin cancer risk and the American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen be used whenever you expect to be in the sun. Unfortunately, sunscreens interfere with the bodys ability to produce vitamin D, almost completely blocking the skins ability to produce this vitamin. Food sources of vitamin D are limited and include: fish, fish oils, fortified milk, and milk-like beverages. Have you had your vitamin D level checked? Do you take vitamin D, and if so, how much?
