VoV urges world to probe HR abuses by troops in IOK Srinagar, August 30: In occupied Kashmir, a human rights forum, Voice of Victims (VoV), organized a candle light protest demonstration at Press Colony in Srinagar in connection with the International Day of Disappeared Persons. The VoV Executive Director, Abdul Qadeer, and Coordinator, Abdur Rauf Khan, while leading the demonstration appealed to the world community to probe the human rights violations committed by Indian troops and police personnel in the territory. They said that Kashmir had witnessed innumerable cases of human rights abuses ranging from torture, extra-judicial killings to enforced disappearances. They said that the suppression and oppression during the past two decade had rendered the family members of victims of enforced disappearance economically crippled and psychologically bruised. “The endless wait, immense pain and unexplained silence describe the pathetic conditions of the family members of those who have lost their loved ones. The denial of justice has added to the plight of the family members of the disappeared people,” they said. The VoV leaders said that the impunity provided to the troops and police personnel through inhumane laws like Armed Forces Special Powers Act, Disturbed Areas Act and Public Safety Act gave them the licence to kill and harass the people and ransack their possession without being questioned and the tragedy was that the burden of proof was shifted on the victims. The rights body called for conducting an independent inquiry through an international community to probe the cases of enforced disappearances, extra-judicial killings, torture, rape and other rights abuses in the territory, as India and its puppet administration were hell bent to hush up the cases. It also demanded withdrawal of Indian troops and revocation of black laws from the territory. It also reiterated its demand to dissolve, disband and disarm the Indian army-sponsored so-called Village Defence Committees whose members had unleashed a reign of terror against the Muslims in Jammu region.
