This action started a chain of events called the Persian Wars. 499 BC Marathon: The great land victory by the Athenians over the Persians in 490 BC Thermopylae: An attempt by 300 Spartan soldiers to hold off the 180,000 Persian army in a mountain pass outside Athens in 480 BC. Although the Spartans lost, their bravery is remembered. Salamis: A mighty victory by the outnumbered Athenian navy over the Persian navy in a narrow strait outside Athens in 480 BC. Plataea: A combined Greek force defeats the Persians in 479 BC, ending the Persian Wars.
