Vogt Opera House, 308 Washington Street Following a fire in The Dalles on Sept. 2, 1888, Max Vogt erected several new brick commercial buildings. On Jan. 1, 1889, the Times-Mountaineer noted that Vogt had two buildings, two stores, and two brick buildings under construction. According to William H. McNeal, who wrote in the early 1950’s, Vogt erected the Vogt Block at Second and Federal and an elegant theater at Third and Washington in 1890. This latter structure burned in 1891 and was rebuilt. Maximilian and Frank Vogt, brothers, settled in The Dalles in the 1860s. Both were born in Germany. Max Vogt was a general merchant and operated his major retail outlet with his sister, Phillipine (Vogt) Chapman.
