Voice of OC gets some kudos for taking a leadership role in covering pedestrian and bicyclist safety in the OC. Theyre shedding light on policies and politicians who tolerate our asphalt arterial slaughterways. But take a look at the two comments after the article. We should all read--and refute--them as examples of sources of political pressure exerted on transportation agency and local decision-makers who justify the devaluation of human lives being moved by non-motorized means. Here are some excerpts: See this???? It is the smallest violin in the world, playing just for bike riders. They are the real danger on the roads . . . Bike riders are the worst, rudest, most annoying people on the road, and they dont deserve one bit of pity. and The risks many [bicyclists] take are incredibly stupid. And when a car inadvertently hits one the driver has to live with the guilt for the rest of his life. I am not opposed to bike lanes but many of our american-style roads arent designed to accomodate them. This isnt Europe. The car is king in America. Always was. Always will be. And not even Dictator Obama can change that.
