Voice of Saranrom In their haste to attack the now evidently popular and progressive coup in Thailand, Australia, the US and the EU have apparently forgotten that Thailand has an inherent right to try to put the country back on track without having well meaning Western countries trying to derail the process. Of course, we respect the right of Australia, the US and the EU to say anything they like, no matter how infantile and self-serving. But we, as Thai citizens, also have the right to criticise that kind of holier-than-thou attitude. We have never pretended the current situation in Thailand does not have any bearing on international relations, and we do struggle to give weight to the opinions of Western governments — however hard that is. But we still insist that Thailand’s political problems are Thailand’s alone to deal with. International relations and trade are important to Thailand. And right now, the fact is Thailand has full understanding and support from all our major trading partners, as well as all our Asean friends. We thank our friends for their understanding and patience which will be richly rewarded. At the same time, we will also not forget the misguided condemnation and unkind criticism when our grave internal problems are finally tackled. In closing, I would like to ask: If Thailand really becomes a pariah state, as Mr Wilde claimed, where Australia, the US and the EU are concerned, exactly who stands to lose the most in terms of trade and good relations? Thailand? Or Australia, the US and the EU? Kantanit Sukontasap Cr. Re: “Respect world view” (PostBag, June 5), Bangkok Post, 06/06/2014
